Group Slams CA Rep. Ken Calvert for Leading Party in Effort to Protect Confederate Flag Displays at National Parks

Earlier today, as South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley signed historic legislation to remove the confederate flag from the State House grounds, Republicans in the US House of Representatives, led by California Rep. Ken Calvert, moved to defeat amendments that would have restricted the display of the confederate flag symbol on federal grounds, such as national parks and veteran cemeteries.  Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign issued the following statement reacting to the news:

“It is shameful that California Republican Ken Calvert would stand up in Congress and lead his party in the effort to protect the confederate flag -- a clear and potent symbol of white supremacy, slavery and segregation -- on the same day that South Carolina officials took the important steps of removing that symbol of hate from the State House grounds.

Plain and simple, if Rep. Calvert does not have the courage to stand up to racists in his own party, we cannot expect him to act in the best interests of all Californians.”
