Courage Campaign Success Stories

"California's Sarah Palin" radio ads make a big splash

Meg Whitman aired radio ads across the state, trying to present herself as a moderate to Californians. But when it comes to global warming, she is just another Sarah Palin. Courage Campaign members helped produce and air a radio ad across California to hold Meg Whitman accountable — and we got Whitman’s attention in the process.

Whitman, like Sarah Palin, believes that action to stop global warming is somehow detrimental to the state’s economy, despite the fact that it not only saves us from costly disasters in the near future, but that such action also spurs the development of green jobs that will put Californians back to work.

We thought Californians should know about that. And so did our members. We raised enough money to air our ad on radio stations across California. You can listen to the ad here:

Our radio ad got attention all over the state — including from Meg Whitman herself. Whitman’s campaign sent an email to their list trying to fundraise off of our ad, even linking to it so that others could see what we had done. Anytime a major political figure responds to our activism, it’s a sign we’ve made a big impact.

The ad has also been effective in causing people to ask questions about whether Whitman’s strategy of attacking environmental legislation makes sense in California. The Los Angeles Times called Whitman’s position “a risky move” and prominently cited the Courage Campaign’s ad as an example of how Whitman’s stance has generated public reaction.

The Courage Campaign will continue to hold politicians accountable for their actions and proposals throughout 2010.
