Courage Campaign airs new radio ad calling out Meg Whitman as “California’s Sarah Palin” for stance on global warming

Progressive group sides with Governor Schwarzenegger in call for accountability as talks continue at climate change summit in Copenhagen

Los Angeles, CA — The Courage Campaign today released a radio ad — called “California’s Sarah Palin” — condemning billionaire CEO Meg Whitman’s extreme position on global warming. Whitman, who wants to become California’s next Governor, has followed Sarah Palin’s lead on global warming by opposing legislation that would help solve the climate crisis.

Airing on radio stations in Los Angeles, Sacramento and the Silicon Valley on the final day of the world summit on global warming in Copenhagen, the 60-second spot highlights the fact that Meg Whitman and Sarah Palin share the same view on the climate crisis. Both argue that nothing should be done right now to address the problem — Whitman has said she would suspend Assembly Bill 32, California’s landmark carbon reduction law, as her first act in office.

The Courage Campaign, in holding Meg Whitman accountable for her position on AB 32, joins Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in countering emerging right-wing attempts to undermine efforts to address global warming. This week, Schwarzenegger condemned Sarah Palin for her views, saying “I think there are people that just don’t believe in fixing and working on the environment. They don’t believe there is such a thing as global warming. They’re still living in the Stone Age.” In a developing war of words, Palin then responded to Schwarzenegger’s comments on Facebook.

Rick Jacobs, Courage Campaign founder and former chair of Howard Dean’s presidential campaign in California, said of Schwarzenegger’s comments: “Even Governor Schwarzenegger gets it — Sarah Palin and Meg Whitman are dangerously wrong.”

Jacobs roundly condemned Whitman. “Meg Whitman is pandering to the Sarah Palin fringe. Whitman says we should adopt a wait-and-see attitude on global warming but ‘wait-and-see’ is tantamount to ‘let it burn’ in California, the seventh largest economy and the 12th largest emitter of carbon in the world.”

TRANSCRIPT OF “CALIFORNIA’S SARAH PALIN”:

There is something rotten in Denmark.

At the climate change conference in Copenhagen, world leaders — including President Obama and Governor Schwarzenegger — are working on real solutions to global warming.

But Meg Whitman, who wants to be Governor of California, is standing with Sarah Palin and a group of extreme right-wingers in attacking solutions to the climate crisis.

Whitman wants to reverse California’s groundbreaking effort to address global warming — stopping a measure Governor Schwarzenegger went to Copenhagen to defend.

Why do out-of-touch ideologues like Sarah Palin and Meg Whitman oppose common-sense solutions to stop global warming?

Talk about “going rogue.”

Go to CourageCampaign.org to learn why Meg Whitman is California’s Sarah Palin.

We don’t need another extremist “going rogue” on Californians.
