Courage Campaign statement on Democratic caucus decision to support Assemblymember John A. Perez as Speaker

LOS ANGELES, CA — Rick Jacobs, Chair of the 700,000-member Courage Campaign, released the following statement today:

“The Courage Campaign is delighted that the Democratic caucus in the California Assembly united in supporting John A. Perez as its next Speaker. They’ve chosen a true progressive who will lead our state during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’re proud that he’s the first openly gay leader of a legislature in U.S. history and we’re looking forward to working closely with Assemblymember Perez to help build a more progressive California.”

On December 3, Jacobs wrote the following piece on the Huffington Post about Assemblymember Perez and his potential ascension to Speaker. Jacobs said:

“John Perez is California. He’s openly gay. He’s Latino. He’s a son of Los Angeles. He’s an intellectual, a strategist, an environmentalist, a labor leader. He’s an organizer, a skilled consensus-builder, a unifier and a stunningly disarming public speaker. John is that rare elected official that we know will hold the public interest at heart.”
