Statement by Courage Campaign Issues Committee Chair Rick Jacobs on Today’s Supreme Court Action to Review Constitutional Challenges to Proposition 8
LOS ANGELES, CA – Rick Jacobs, Founder and Chair of the Courage Campaign Issues Committee, released the following statement regarding today’s California Supreme Court decision to review legal challenges to Proposition 8, a ballot measure that eliminates fundamental marriage rights.
“Through the efforts of Lambda Legal, The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), the California Supreme Court has agreed to review challenges to Proposition 8.
“While we are confident the court will find in favor of protecting marriage rights for all, we are preparing for any outcome. Our sincere hope is any action the court takes does not negatively affect the thousands of couples who chose to get married before the November election.
“As we await the court’s decision, we will work to engage every community in California by mobilizing our members in a grassroots effort to restore marriage rights. In the last ten days alone, we have collected nearly 300,000 online pledges to repeal Proposition 8 at the ballot box. The more than 350,000 members of the Courage Campaign will continue to organize, educate and prepare for the prospect of a ballot measure in 2010. We believe this approach will not only help us qualify a new ballot measure but it will assure that the measure wins.”
To date, 291,666 people have signed the pledge to repeal Prop 8, launched by the Courage Campaign Issues Committee and joined by CREDO Mobile and MoveOn.org Political Action. The pledge and frequently updated pledge totals can be viewed here:
