Statement from Courage Campaign on Democratic Budget Solution and Governor’s Veto

LOS ANGELES – Rick Jacobs, founder and chair of the Courage Campaign — a MoveOn-style online organizing network in California with more than 300,000 members — today made the following statement praising Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg for their innovative and creative solution to the state’s budget crisis:

“Speaker Bass and Pro Tem Steinberg stood up for California today, showing real leadership in the face of right-wing Republicans holding our state hostage.  Governor Schwarzenegger had a chance to terminate the current budget calamity, but instead he chose to act as a partisan committed to bankrupt ideology rather than the people of this state.”

“Our network of over 300,000 Californians fully back Speaker Bass and Pro Tem Steinberg for taking a risk for all of us.  While we need a short-term solution now to avoid state bankruptcy and more pain to children, the elderly and those least able to fend for themselves, this whole mess is a neon billboard advertising an end to the absurd rule that requires a 2/3 vote to approve a budget.  We must change the law to save our state.”

“Governor Schwarzenegger will no doubt celebrate Christmas in the warmth of one his many homes.  He deserves a lump of coal and nothing more.”
