Mr. President, thank you for no longer defending DOMA in court. Now it's time to speak out for equality

Today the Department of Justice announced that they will stop defending DOMA

In August of 2010, Courage Campaign asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to stop defending DOMA, the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act." This morning, we were thrilled when Attorney General Eric Holder announced that President Obama and the DOJ would no longer defend DOMA in the courts. This is a huge step forward for marriage equality, but it certainly isn't a full victory.

President Obama has shown through this action -- and in his past statements -- that he believes discrimination is wrong and that LGBT people deserve full equality, but he has yet to publicly voice his support. That's why Courage Campaign is asking President Obama to take the next step and speak out in support of marriage equality. Will you stand with us?

Statement of the Attorney General on Litigation Involving the Defense of Marriage Act

Please add your name to our card below thanking Obama and asking him to speak out for equality.

Dear Mr. President:

Thank you for your decision today to instruct the Department of Justice to no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court. I remember what hope feels like again.

Today through Attorney General Holder you made your sentiments clear - that given the history of discrimination faced by lesbian and gay Americans, DOMA is no longer defensible. You may never know how much that statement means to me.

But now Mr. President, I want a speech -- a big speech -- a speech that only you can give. Speak to us like grown-ups and tell us why you have evolved. That is why I'm signing this open letter asking you personally to speak out for the freedom to marry.

It's time, Mr. President.
