Courage Campaign May 19, 2009 statewide special election survey

It's up to you! Vote now to determine the Courage Campaign's final Progressive Voter Guide endorsements:

On May 19, 2009 California voters will go to the polls in a special election to decide ballot propositions that deal with the budget. The Courage Campaign will produce a Progressive Voter Guide for those initiatives. As a people-powered organization, our endorsements reflect the will of our membership, so we need to hear from you about these choices and whether or not you support our staff recommendations.

Read the following information about the six propositions and then tell us what endorsements you think we should make. The vote of current Courage Campaign members (one person per vote) will be binding and final, and we will announce the results on Tuesday, April 28, when we send you the Courage Campaign's Progressive Voter Guide.

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS: The Courage Campaign staff is recommending you vote "No"on Propositions 1A, 1C, 1D, 1E, and 1F. We are not recommending a position on Proposition 1B. The staff believes these propositions do not offer the progressive solutions that California needs. Briefly, here are the reasons why we are recommending a "No" vote on Props 1A, 1C, 1D, 1E and 1F:

  • A "No" vote on Prop 1A will stop a spending cap that will force long-term cuts to core programs such as schools and health care.
  • A "No" vote on Prop 1C will stop Arnold Schwarzenegger from throwing our unpredictable lottery revenues to
the derivatives market on Wall Street.
  • A "No" vote on Props 1D and 1E will protect the programs for children under age 5 and the mentally ill that voters previously approved.
  • A "No" vote on Prop 1F rejects a meaningless right-wing attack on our public officials.

For more in-depth information on the Courage Campaign's staff recommendations, please read our full recommendation here.

OPPOSING ARGUMENTS: You can also read the arguments in support of the six propositions from Speaker
Karen Bass and State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.
