13 Love Stories
In order to win Marriage Equality, we believe that it's fundamental to tell the loving stories of LGBT families. Our friends at 13 Love Stories are doing just that. We are proud to feature 13 Love Stories here and urge you to watch all of these moving videos at 13LoveStories.com13LoveStories.com is a unique multimedia advocacy project that profiles thirteen couples in Southern California whose lives were profoundly affected by Proposition 8. London-based photographer Gideon Mendel, UCLA students, and a production team including Derrick Shore and Bobby Gordon worked with each couple to create these videos, which movingly show the human cost of Prop 8.
The beautiful project's contention is that, in the media campaign leading up to the hotly contested November 2008 vote, something essential was missing: images of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer couples whose relationships hung in the balance. Here, images of those relationships are restored.
London-based photographer Gideon Mendel directed the project in collaboration with co-curators David Gere and Janna Shadduck-Hernández, professors at UCLA (University of California - Los Angeles), and with invaluable help from a class of UCLA students. Co-sponsors are these UCLA entities: Art|Global Health Center, LGBT Resource Center, Labor Center, Department of World Arts and Cultures, School of the Arts and Architecture, and the Student Coalition for Marriage Equality.
