As I write this, we are beginning to hear results from Maine’s version of Prop. 8 and will soon enough hear about right wing attempts to quash freedom in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Washington state. How well we all remember election night here in California last year, that flash of impossible joy and elation at the election of Barack Obama juxtaposed with the horror of the loss of equal rights. How could both be true? How could we elect Barack Obama and simultaneously watch our fellow Californians vote away our rights?

A year later, regardless of the outcome of these elections tonight, the progressive movement is much broader, more determined and smarter. We know what must be done to change the way people think. We know that multiple tactics, ranging from court fights to ballot box battles to marches to push for federal legislation all must happen simultaneously. We also know that those who invest in repression, in damaging families and in singling out LGBT people (or other minorities) for discrimination must be called on their actions and their investments.   Read More »
Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was that an amazingly gracious church who, on a hot, San Bernardino summer day, had 200 sweltering people emotionally overheated and packed into its hall with an AC struggling to keep up.

Or maybe it's because the California LGBT population has cannibalized its leadership to the point where no one is willing to take the unpopular stance of leading this wounded community made up of people that will bite anyone's head off who has a slightly different opinion from theirs.

Whatever you believe the reason to be, the Leadership Summit on Sunday was an utter failure. And we have no one to blame but ourselves.   Read More »
I just got back from Camp Courage Oakland. And my group was amazing. They inspired and motivated me so much. Being a facilitator was great. I was nervous because I was younger than a majority of my group but I powered through and I really accomplished my goal. My goal going in was to really work on my skills as a leader and to learn to listen more. I still talked a lot but that's what I do when I am nervous. In the end I felt like my campers really grasped the knowledge and really taught me some things as well.

I took the leadership 2.0 break out session and it helped a lot. Torie really helped me learn some things about how to be a good leader. I also took the Campaigns 2.0 but at that point I was exhausted and took some notes but definitely needed a ton of coffee!
The word is out, prominent leaders of the Mormon church are pushing financial and voter support for Prop 8, the ballot measure which asks California voters to discriminate against one group of people. Yes in 2008, that is what we are voting on. Thanks to Courage Campaign efforts, the mainstream media is starting to put a face on some of the culprits who believe discrimination is o.k. and some folks inside the church are beginning to become uncomfortable with it.   Read More »
The Courage Campaign has long championed the battle for affordable and accessible health care. It's why we asked you to join us in asking Terry McAuliffe to please don't do it as we approach his high-priced speaking engagement in San Francisco for insurance executives. And it's why we partnered with the California Nurses Association and Senator Sheila Kuehl today to introduce our new "Insurance Jive" ad.

Rick Jacobs emailed Courage subscribers earlier today explaining just how much is at stake and and how much a small contribution to air this ad can accomplish:   Read More »
But who's complaining? We've had a pretty good run of good news in the past week or two- something we haven't really been used to over the past few years. We come up with lots of ideas at the Courage Campaign, and obviously we think they're generally pretty good. But as we look forward to build on the momentum from recent victories, we need to hear from you.

That's why we've opened up the Courage Campaign Suggestion Box. Our Managing Director Eden James explained all the details yesterday via email:   Read More »

Local leaders gathered today outside the office of Mayor Jerry Sanders to present him with more than 2,500 signatures to the letter from San Diego Democratic Party Chair Jess Durfee calling for an investigation into Blackwater's permit process. There was a somewhat unexpected air of celebration to the event as it was announced yesterday that Mayor Sanders is calling for the city's Chief Executive Officer to conduct a full review of the Blackwater permit process (of course now we'll see what comes of it).

The stage was shared by Jess Durfee (who noted he knows a few things about vocational schools courtesy of a Master's degree in vocational education), Courage Campaign's Rick Jacobs, Humberto Peraza- district Chief of Staff for Rep. Filner, Francine Busby and Ray Lutz from Citizens' Oversight Projects.

All the parties involved have been instrumental in the rapid and effective response to this new Blackwater situation. Remember it's been barely two weeks since the news originally broke of this new facility, yet here everyone was gathered to mark and celebrate a significant people-powered success story.

Today was a great opportunity to cement in no uncertain terms the coalition to Block Blackwater which has formed rapidly and forced action from the Mayor. And we're just getting warmed up. There have been recent revelations that Blackwater is looking to expand operations at current facilities and open a new training facility in Idaho. Why? Because they see the writing on the wall. They know that Iraq isn't going to last much longer, partly because they've behaved so criminally and partly because the war is such a debacle. They know that their survival depends on diversifying and establishing new roles in a post-Bush/Iraq system. It's why they're looking for a few good hundred million in new investment capital. It's because there's no natural place for them to exist once they can't get anymore handouts from the Bush Administration and their cronies.

Today was a victory. Tomorrow we'll likely need another. But we're developing the methods that win.
Yesterday's legislative hearing on election problems in Los Angeles stretched all afternoon, with several hours of testimony from Dean Logan, Conny McCormack and others before voters got the opportunity to make their case. The Daily Breeze notes that Dean Logan was greeted by boos from the crowd of concerned voters and election integrity activists, but as BradBlog explains (drawing in part from the same article), Conny McCormack tried blaming Secretary of State Debra Bowen for the double bubble problem and

...it was McCormack who was met with the most derision, by audience and Legislative inquisitors both, as she dissembled to the panel and attempted to blame Bowen's "Top-to-Bottom Review" of voting systems for her own failure, disingenuously saying the SoS' efforts to do the job she was elected to do, was the reason that McCormack couldn't have fixed the problem before it disenfranchised thousands of legal voters again this year...

This double bubble thing sure has some legs. The discussion continues tomorrow in downtown LA with all the major electoral players in the house. Secretary of State Bowen will be there. Registrar Dean Logan and recently departed Registrar Conny McCormack. The Courage Campaign's lawyer. And a gaggle of LA electeds for good measure (and to give the forum a purpose).

The Courage Campaign proper will be represented, but this has always been about the voters. So we hope that any Courage supporters who are in the area can come by the hearing and help us fix the double bubble and all the other problems that were brought to light on election day last month.

Rick Jacobs extends a proper invitation on the flip.   Read More »
In the wake of the double bubble victory in Los Angeles that'll get more than 80% of the ballots counted, everyone's excitedly piling on. The LA Times has an opinion piece blogged called Double Bubble Smackdown! that revels in Dean Logan's final count. It focuses more on the chilly relations between Debra Bowen and LA County that preexisted over voter machine decertification.

The new tensions will be coming to a head tomorrow (Friday) at 1pm during the special hearing. As noted, "The hearing will be conducted by Senators Jenny Oropeza and Ron Calderon, and Assemblyman Curren Price. All are Democrats representing parts of Los Angeles County."

Debra Bowen will be there. Dean Logan will be there. Immediate former Registrar Conny McCormack will be there. Courage Campaign will be represented by our lawyer Steven Reyes. A rousing good time will be had by all. Within the context of an election integrity forum anyhow.

The final results are in for Los Angeles County, with nearly 80% of the double bubble ballots ultimately being counted towards the final total. As the Whittier Daily News reports:

The count, completed Sunday, had no effect on the outcome of the primary.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton received 51 percent of the 47,153 votes that were counted. Barack Obama gained 42percent of those same ballots.

Just over 12,000 votes could not be interpreted, said Dean Logan, the acting registrar-recorder/county clerk.

Of course, as the article goes on to say, Logan began the process not expecting any of the ballots to be counted:

Logan initially believed none of the "double bubble" votes could be counted in cases where non-partisan voters had failed to fill in a bubble specifying in which party's presidential race they were casting a "crossover" ballot.

Julia Rosen, who is in Reno right now planning to blog a few times this weekend about the Nevada Caucuses, just sent the following email out to our Courage Campaign community:

-------

Hey everyone,

Greetings from Reno, Nevada, where I am sitting in the headquarters of the winner of our "Pick Your President" poll, stealing some free wi-fi on my laptop and getting ready to blog this weekend's events for the Courage Campaign blog.

And who received the most votes of California progressives? Drum roll please...

Barack Obama!

Here are California's full results. John Edwards kept it neck-and-neck with Obama in the days and hours leading up to our 5 p.m. deadline tonight, but Senator Obama pulled away at the end.

Sen. Barack Obama: 38%
Sen. John Edwards: 33%
Rep. Dennis Kucinich: 16%
Sen. Hillary Clinton: 12%
Gov. Bill Richardson: 0.6%
Sen. Mike Gravel: 0.4%

It wasn't even close nationally. Obama's supporters really got out the vote and he won in a landslide.

Sen. Barack Obama: 55%
Sen. John Edwards: 23%
Sen. Hillary Clinton: 11%
Rep. Dennis Kucinich: 10%
Gov. Bill Richardson: 0.5%
Sen. Mike Gravel: 0.3%

You can check out all of the results (including the Republicans) in Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Washington and Wisconsin here:

Thank you for voting and naming your favorite candidate. But your work has just begun. Now is the time to make sure you and all of your friends are set to vote in California's official primary on February 5.

Unlike in previous presidential election years, your primary vote in California matters. No matter which candidate you are voting for, here's how you can help determine who may become the next President of the United States:

1. Make sure you are registered to vote.

To vote in the February 5 primary, you only have until January 22 -- this Tuesday -- to mail in your form. Use VotePoke, by our friends at MoveOn, to double check that you are registered. If you do not show up as registered, you will have the opportunity to register to vote via VotePoke:

http://votepoke.org

2. Request an absentee ballot to vote-by-mail.

If you would like to vote-by-mail (VBM) instead of at the polls, you have until January 29 to request a VBM ballot. Click on the Secretary of State's web site below to download the form, fill it out, and mail it in:

http://sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_m.htm

3. If you are a "Decline-to-State" (DTS) voter, make sure you (and your friends) can vote in a party primary.

Did you know that almost 3 million voters are registered as "Decline-to-State" in California (19.3% of 15.5 million registered voters)? However, only 8% of DTS voters actually voted for a presidential candidate in the 2004 presidential primary. Why? One reason is that many DTS voters do not know that they can vote for president in California's Democratic primary -- an open primary.

Here's the deal: If you are a DTS voter -- and you want to vote for President in the Democratic primary -- you must request a Democratic ballot. Otherwise, if you do not make a request for a Democratic ballot, you will only be able to vote on the state propositions. (NOTE: Under Republican Party rules, DTS voters are NOT permitted to vote in the Republican primary.)

If you are voting at the polls, be sure to ask your poll worker for a Democratic ballot before voting. If you are DTS and voting-by-mail, you may request a Democratic ballot from your county elections official. Click here to obtain your county elections office contact information:

http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_d.htm

Now, I am off to find some good Nevada Caucus stories to blog along with three of my favorite blogging buddies: Lucas O'Connor, a fellow Courage Campaign and Calitics blogger; Brian Leubitz, the editor of Calitics; and Paul Hogarth of Beyond Chron. You can check out my posts this weekend on the Courage Campaign blog:

Again, a special thank you to all those Courage Campaign members who voted in the Pick Your President poll and passed it on to your friends.

See you on our blog,

Julia Rosen
Online Political Director

P.S. Stay tuned for a message from the Courage Campaign about retroactive immunity for telecom companies. We may have won the battle in December, delaying the vote to renew FISA, but it is scheduled to come back up again on the Senate floor next week. If we are going to stop the Bush Administration from rewarding law-breaking telecom companies for spying on Americans, your participation is crucial.

Courage Campaign is an independent political committee and online organizing network empowering grassroots and netroots activists to build a progressive California. In 2008, the Courage Campaign will catalyze action to help Californians elect a progressive President, hold our elected officials accountable, and block Blackwater from building a base on our border.

We've got ourselves a heck of a horserace shaping up as the PickYourPresident poll continues. In just 24 hours we've seen a lot of movement in the standings, with John Edwards cutting Obama's California lead in half. Elsewhere, Clinton bumped Edwards for 2nd in Ohio and the two are separated by a whisker in Michigan- further evidence of a Clinton surge over the weekend.

I've got big plans to head for Reno at the end of the week (Friday, also when the poll ends), and I've got no idea what to expect from the Nevada caucus. Given that Nevada has never seen a caucus like this, it's impossible to predict with certainty what will happen there. But given how unpredictable the nomination process has already been on both sides, I can't imagine it'll be definitive. I'm waiting right now for Michigan results to be finalized, but that won't matter much on the Democratic side. Momentum is a fickle beast, but Super Tuesday is the one time it could actually matter. Polling throughout Feb 5 states have shown that races are tightening all over. Who knows what could happen at this point, but if you have a candidate that you support, the more public your support, the better.   Read More »
