As Arnold's horrific budget cuts get wider exposure, Californians are beginning to fight back. Over the next few days there will be several rallies around the state to stop these cuts.
Tonight at 5pm in Los Angeles there is a rally to Stop the HIV cuts - cuts that include slashing funding for helping AIDS patients get the medication they need to live. The rally is at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and will take place rain or shine. Another rally will happen on Wednesday at the State Capitol in Sacramento - more information can be found here.
Also in Los Angeles UCLA students will be rallying Wednesday evening at Bruin Plaza at 6:30 to protest the proposed elimination of Cal Grants - find more at the Facebook event page.
The above events are also listed on our events page. If you have an event you want Courage Campaign members to know about, post it there - and direct others to the page as well!

Would we not be better served by taking all that "anti" energy and putting it to use devising how we are going to help the people who will be most affected by the budget cuts that are going to happen. If government is not going to be in a position to help these people, who says we, as citizens, cannot do it ourselves?
One might feel good about one's self by attending an anti-budget cut rally, but that isn't going to do anything for the 2 million people who are going to loose their health care safety net. I would respectfully suggest that as the budget cuts must happen, it is how we respond to them, and what we do to help out those who are most affected, that will define who we are.
Being progressive is not just about being "anti" - that's a lot more like being.. a Republican. Being progressive is coming up with real ideas to solve real problems. I for one, am going to put my efforts into plans to organize health care opportunities for those who are going to harmed by inevitable budget cutting. Rather than howl at the moon, wouldn't we all be more useful doing the same?
An example is an oil severance tax (AB 656 Torrico). That would bring in $1 billion a year. Enough to save health programs and state parks, too. Why should California be the only state that does not impose this tax?
Also, we should restore the top income tax brackets on incomes above $250,000. Contrary to the statement recently made by Mike Genest, the wealthy do benefit from state services. Why should the wealthy be exempt from pitching in during this crisis?
