Marriage Equality in New Jersey: Call Your Senator

Marriage equality is on the line in New Jersey! The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on marriage equality for same-sex couples all across the state this Tuesday. This is our chance to tell key legislators just how important it is to vote YES today for marriage equality. Please take a moment to use our “click-to-call” tool to tell your Senator to vote “Yes” on marriage equality.

The New Jersey State Senate is meeting this week and a marriage equality bill is on the agenda. Due to the relentless work of groups like Garden State Equality and others, this historic bill to recognize the right of same-sex couples to marry the person they love could become law. But only with your help.

With the loss in New York last week, it is more important than ever that we regain momentum for marriage equality with a victory in the Garden State. Republican Governor-elect Chris Christie has vowed to veto marriage equality, so we have to act now before he takes office in January.

Here’s what’s happening: Monday, the State Senate Judiciary will vote on whether to send the bill to the full Senate for approval later this week. If we get the bill out of that committee, we’ll have built momentum to pass marriage equality in the full Senate and then the Assembly.

Governor Corzine has promised to sign it. And since New Jersey’s constitution does not allow for referendums (as in California and Maine), right-wing opponents of equality cannot reverse the outcome at the ballot box.

You have the chance to help a fellow New Jerseyan marry the person they love. Your Senator needs to hear from you right now.

The Courage Campaign has set up an easy “click-to-call” tool that puts you on the phone directly with your State Senator’s office. Just click here now to tell your Senator to vote “Yes” on marriage equality (by voting for bill #S1967)!
