California has the power to ban the use of chlorpyrifos in the state, and if it does, it will mean that a huge portion of the country’s food is no longer sprayed with the chemical. Will you place a call to Governor Brown and let him know that Californians will no longer tolerate our food being sprayed with this dangerous chemical?
Courage Campaign fights to hold our political leaders and most powerful corporations accountable to the will of the people.
The President of the United States -- the supposed leader of the free world -- just publicly, shamelessly, and embarrassingly stood with the white supremacists and Neo-Nazis who rioted in Charlottesville. There is no longer simply a legal case to impeach Donald Trump. There is now a moral imperative.
Sign the petition calling on the United States Congress to impeach and try Donald Trump.
Approximately 9,000 rape kits are sitting dormant in law enforcement offices all across California -- potentially never to be tested. Survivors of sexual assault endure a four- to six-hour process to collect the DNA of their attackers with no guarantee that the evidence will ever be tested or used to reach a conviction.
AB 41 is a bill that would require a reporting process from law enforcement offices, mandating that they track rape kits and give a reason for those that are left untested. The bill is a key step in ensuring that law enforcement is held accountable to testing these kits, while also giving the state a clearer idea of what resources are necessary to ensure that all kits are tested in the future. It passed through the Assembly and was put on hold in order to go over any potential financial concerns, but the Appropriations Committee can drive it forward. We need to make our voices heard: justice for survivors of sexual assault is worth the financial cost.
Forced into indentured servitude with threats to sign lease-to-own contracts or be fired, truckers spend over 100 hours a week trying to pay off their trucks. Sometimes at the end of a week they end up owing the company!
But major retailers -- like Target and Costco -- who employ these port truckers along their chain of production, can help stop the abuse. By dropping these trucking companies, they set an example for other corporations and let them know that we're watching.
The California Legislature is about to vote on a deeply flawed climate bill that won’t do enough to reduce carbon emissions, while also giving corporate polluters carte blanche to keep poisoning California’s cities -- with poor folks and communities of color paying the biggest toll.
Assembly Bill 398 -- a bill to extend CA's cap and trade system from 2020 to 2030 -- is stuffed with giveaways to Big Oil and other corporate polluters in order to court Republican support. But sources inside the Capitol report that the bill is vulnerable. We can kill this bill if enough Democrats vote no despite the intense political pressure to support it.
In 2015, the EPA announced that after years of study, it couldn’t guarantee the safety of chlorpyrifos, and recommended banning it. Then Trump came into office and put Scott Pruitt -- a climate change denier and enemy of environmental regulation -- in charge of the EPA. Now the EPA is just ignoring its own findings and refusing to ban this dangerous chemical.
California Governor Jerry Brown can order the California Department of Pesticide Regulation to ban this chemical -- but he needs to hear from more of the public. Gov. Brown is considering his environmental legacy, and he's promised to resist the Trump administration. Ask him to ban chlorpyrifos now to help protect consumers, farmworkers, and communities around the nation.
The EPA has approved fifty-nine pesticides that contain neonicotinoids. Hundreds of studies have shown the dangers of these chemicals -- not only by killing many of California's bees, but harming small mammals and birds as well. SB 602 would help to undo the mess that the EPA has created by requiring clear labels on products that use neonicotinoids.
The bill is being voted on this week. We are up against Big Ag and their claims that there is no proof that these chemicals kill bees. We need your help. Will you call today and ask your senator to support SB 602?
Donald Trump was the first major party presidential candidate to refuse to release his tax returns since Richard Nixon was president. That makes it impossible to know whether Trump’s policy decisions are being made to benefit the public, or his bank account -- and that’s a huge problem.
The Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act (SB 149) would require all presidential candidates to file their last five income tax returns with the state in order to have their name placed on the ballot. It is up to us to make sure it passes by letting our legislators know, loud and clear, that we support a transparent presidency free of any conflicts of interest.
Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey threatens our democracy. It’s an emergency, and it requires a forceful, unequivocal response from Democratic leaders.
If the President is allowed to squash an investigation into potential crimes committed by his campaign -- and possibly the President himself -- then he’s putting himself above the law. That’s something that happens in dictatorships, not democracies.
If California is going to stand up to similar attacks by the GOP and Donald Trump's dangerous agenda, then we need to have high expectations of our elected officials. They need integrity. They need diligence. They need courage. And if legislators can't live up to those expectations, they need to be held accountable.
That's why we're launching the 2017 People's Report Card of California -- it clearly shows which California state legislators have taken courageous votes for the public interest and which ones are putting corporate interests first.
